Residential Assessment Units in Care Proceedings
What is a Residential Assessment Unit?
During care proceedings an application can be made for a parent or family to be placed into an residential assessment unit. These types of assessments usually last 12 weeks and are independent of the local authority and social services. You will be placed into either an individual room within a home with other parents with shared living spaces, or in a self-contained flat.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed on your parenting skills and ability to meet your child’s needs. This can will include taking care of your child’s basic care needs (feeding, changing etc), ability to keep your child safe, emotional warmth (hugs and praise etc) and your ability to follow professionals advice and guidance.
Over the 12 weeks you will be offered support and learning opportunities to improve upon your parenting skills such as courses and support from staff members.
Depending on the level of support and monitoring you need, some residential units have round the clock staff, and CCTV to help with your assessment.
You will get regular updates and will usually have a halfway assessment report to identify positives and where you may need help and guidance.
Can I still keep my own property?
A residential placement is temporary. You will need to make sure you continue to pay your bills and rent if you are renting and manage your finances. In residential assessment units, some will offer courses around finances to help you.
How do I make an application for a Residential Unit?
