What to do if you are considering paying for care

If you are considering paying for care, it is important to seek legal advice from an early stage. It is understandable that during this time you will have a number of questions, such as:

  • How much will it cost?
  • Who has to pay for it?
  • Will it affect my family home?
  • Can something be done to protect the family wealth?

Our dedicated Private Client team are here to answer your queries, providing you with expert support and guidance throughout your case.

How much will it cost?

The cost of care in the UK is dependent on a number of factors, such as: the type of care being received, the location, and the accommodation provider. It is common for such care to cost in the region of £800 per week.

At Elliot Mather, our expert Private Client team are able to offer clear and straightforward advice regarding funding arrangements to ensure you are not paying more than required, or that you aren’t needlessly selling your family home.

Who has to pay the fees?

If you have made the decision to begin paying for care, the Local Authority will complete a financial assessment in order to calculate whether they will be required to fund your care, and if so, how much this would be.

If you are in the fortunate position of having sufficient income or capital to cover your fees, selling the family home may never be an issue. However, where that may be a possibility, we can advise you on how you might organise your property affairs, and prepare Wills which will help mitigate the effects of care or nursing home fees.

How we can help

We appreciate that approaching a solicitor can seem daunting. Our dedicated team are here to guide you through the process of a range of private client services in order to give you peace of mind.

Increasingly, we find that a Nursing or Care Home will want to ensure that a potential resident has a Lasting Power of Attorney in place before they are admitted. We can guide you through the process of appointing Attorneys to ensure your needs are attended to, should care ever become an issue.

The level of help you require from us is entirely up to you.
