Changing Your Name Following Marriage, Civil Partnership or Divorce

There are various reasons as to why you might want to change your name, one example is following a marriage or civil partnership. In this instance, individuals may wish to adopt the surname of a spouse or civil partner or combine both surnames.

You may also wish to revert to your original name following a divorce or dissolution.

Changing Your Name by Deed

When legally changing your name, the most common and effective process is a change of name deed. A deed is a legal document which has the purpose of evidencing the change of your name. This legal document confirms that you have given up your old name and will instead use your new name for all purposes. In order for the deed to be valid, it must also be signed and witnessed.

The process of changing your name by deed can be complex. It is vital that you seek legal advice when you are considering changing your name.

Who do I need to inform when I change my name?

Once you have legally changed your name it is important that you inform certain establishments. It is recommended that you inform the following places of your change of name:

  • The DVLA
  • Passport office – please note that your passport will continue to be valid until its expiry date, meaning you will need to book journeys in your previous name (unless you purchase a new passport).
  • Your bank/building society/mortgage provider.
  • Your employer/university/school.
  • Your registered doctor and dentist.
  • Your utility providers.
  • Your local authority.
  • Any insurance companies.
  • Pension provider.

Please be aware that this is not an exhaustive list. We recommend seeking legal advice to navigate you through the change of name process and which establishments you would need to inform.
