What is Crown Court?

Most criminal cases are dealt with in the magistrates’ court, but the more serious and complicated cases are heard in the Crown Court. When this happens, it is even more important to make sure that you have quality representation. The Crown Court deals with serious cases, including:

• ‘Indictable only’ cases – meaning that the offence is serious and can only be heard in the Crown Court.
• 'Either way’ offences – these are offences that can be heard within the magistrates’ court, however they can also be sent to Crown Court if the defendant chooses to undergo a jury trial.
• Those committed to Crown Court for sentencing – defendants who have been convicted within the magistrates’ court can be sent to the Crown Court for sentencing, dependant on the seriousness of the offence.
